We arrived in Guatemala City at 12:30 on Saturday afternoon. When we left for the airport at 3:00 that morning the plan was simple. After we got settled at the hotel we were to call our coordinator. We were scheduled to meet our son on Monday! We would have almost 48 hours to get things in order, to unpack all the baby things, and to figure out the car seat. We would make our phone calls, have lunch, and then explore the hotel. We wanted to find the baby's lounge and also all the areas that would be appropriate for us with the baby. We could do this, right?
Well, after making at least 4 separate phone calls I finally reached our coordinator's son. He informed us that our son and his foster mother were actually waiting for us in the hotel lobby. I immediately handed Pete the phone, ran around the Front Desk, and went to look for our son. I spotted him sitting with his foster mother all wrapped up in blankets on a sofa near the front entrance. I could tell it was him by his face, those adorable chubby cheeks! I greeted her and asked if she was Rosario and the baby Jose Daniel. When she replied, "Si" I ran to get Pete so we could meet our son together. I must admit, I had to sneak a peak at his adorable face and touch his cheek.
Meeting our son was one of the most memorable times of my life. I felt so overwhelmed that I couldn't tell if I wanted to laugh or cry. So, I just smiled one of those crazy lady smiles. Like one of those people in the papers that just won the lottery. It was wonderful!
There is such irony to our first meeting. Here we were on one side of the front desk and our baby on the other side separated by the ever-powerful Front Desk! It's a lot like our situation right now, don't you think?
I just wish the front desk was on wheels so we could just move it out of the way!
